Terms & Conditions
Last updated 6 September 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and Double Colourless Limited, a company registered in England and Wales (“we”, “us”), about your use of the Sterling app and the website at sterlingaccent.com (together, “Sterling”). By creating an account or using Sterling you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use Sterling.
1. What Sterling is
Sterling is a pronunciation coach for British English, specifically Received Pronunciation. It listens to you speak, scores individual sounds, and gives you exercises and conversations to practise them. It is an educational tool. It is not speech therapy, medical advice or a guarantee of any outcome. How much your accent changes depends on you, and results vary from person to person.
2. Who may use Sterling
You must be at least 13 years old to use Sterling. If you are under 18, you should have a parent or guardian’s permission. By using Sterling you confirm that this is the case.
3. Your account
You need an account to use Sterling. You can create one with Apple, Google or an email address and password. Keep your sign-in details safe: you are responsible for everything done through your account. Tell us at help@sterlingaccent.com if you think someone else has used it. You may delete your account at any time from the Profile tab in the app, which removes your data as described in our Privacy Policy.
4. Subscriptions, trials and payment
Some parts of Sterling require a paid subscription. Subscriptions are sold through Apple’s App Store and are governed by Apple’s terms as well as these. The price, the billing period and any free trial are shown in the app before you subscribe.
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends.
- If a free trial is offered, you will be charged when the trial ends unless you cancel before then. Cancelling during the trial costs nothing.
- You can cancel at any time in your iPhone’s Settings, under your Apple ID and Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
- Payments and refunds are handled by Apple. To request a refund, use Apple’s “Report a Problem” page. We cannot issue refunds directly, but we will help you if you get stuck.
Prices may change. We will tell you before a change affects a subscription you already have, and you may cancel before it takes effect.
5. Using Sterling
We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use Sterling for your own learning. You agree not to:
- copy, sell, rent or redistribute any part of Sterling;
- reverse-engineer the app or try to reach our servers other than through the app;
- use Sterling to build a competing product or to train a machine learning model;
- upload anything unlawful, abusive or that infringes someone’s rights;
- interfere with the service or other people’s use of it.
6. Content
The recordings, lessons, exercises, voices, text, design and software in Sterling belong to us or our licensors and are protected by copyright and other laws. Your own voice recordings remain yours. You give us permission to process them, and the transcripts and scores made from them, in order to provide Sterling to you, as set out in our Privacy Policy.
7. Availability and changes
We work hard to keep Sterling running, but we cannot promise it will always be available or free of faults. We may change, add or remove features, and we may update these terms. If a change is significant we will tell you in the app or by email. Continuing to use Sterling after a change means you accept it.
8. Ending the agreement
You can stop using Sterling and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or close your account if you break these terms, if we are required to by law, or if we stop offering Sterling, in which case we will give you reasonable notice where we can.
9. Our responsibility to you
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law. Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected. Otherwise, we are not responsible for any loss that was not a foreseeable result of our breaking this agreement, and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you have paid for Sterling in the twelve months before the claim.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction over any dispute. If you live elsewhere in the UK or in the EU, you may also rely on the consumer protections and courts of the country you live in.
